THERAPY is something that is extremely important for everyone in my opinion. Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction with adults, to help a person change behavior and overcome problems in desired ways. Here I will be discussing my experience with working and finding the right therapist for me.
I started going to therapy around 2007 to work on my food addiction. I didn’t know it would uncover a lot of anger about my past. It was eye opening to me how poorly I treated myself on many levels. I have been in therapy on and off since then. I would say one of the most important things is to find the right therapist for you. I got lucky with my first therapist as she came highly recommended from a friend (who is coincidentally also a therapist). We worked together for about 4 years. I felt that I wanted a different style of therapy and at first took a break for about a year. When I went back to another therapist was also very good. He focused a lot on sitting with feelings and making room for just being, its a really hard practice. After about a year I took a long break from therapy. When I noticed my thoughts start to shift back into a negative space I again was looking for a therapist. I found someone but she was not the right fit for me at all. I gave it 6 sessions, which in my opinion was 4 too many. At this point I did not take a break and looked up a therapist within my area through my insurance website. Something about her just felt right and I’m glad I went with my gut. I do still see her, although less often, I’m very happy with the style she has and the boundaries we have created. I can speak freely and I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past 4.5 years.
